A Pavilion on the World Stage
Expo 2025 was held in Osaka, Japan, bringing together countries from around the world to showcase their culture, architecture, and visions for the future. For the occasion, the Czech Republic launched an open architectural and design competition for its Expo pavilion for the first time in more than 20 years. A total of 38 teams submitted their proposals. The expert jury selected the striking glass spiral designed by Apropos Architects as the winning concept. The design builds on the Czech Republic’s successful Expo appearances of the past.
Timber Meets Glass
The approximately 1,000 m² pavilion combined a distinctive timber structure with a curtain façade made of artistically crafted glass. The building reflected the Czech Republic's long tradition of glassmaking and was one of the largest timber structures of its kind in Japan without a supporting steel framework.
The spiral guided visitors all the way to the rooftop terrace. Its clear architectural language and strong visual identity made the pavilion one of the standout attractions of Expo 2025. The architecture was particularly impressive at night, when the illuminated structure created a striking visual presence.
Inside, the pavilion housed an exhibition, an auditorium, business facilities, a restaurant and a lounge. In front of the building, a waterside terrace invited visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
With a total of four awards, the pavilion was one of the most successful contributions to Expo 2025 in Osaka:
- Gold – People’s Choice Award for being voted the public’s favourite pavilion
- Silver – Best Pavilion Mascot for the Czech Pavilion’s mascot
- Silver – Architecture (Bureau International des Expositions, BIE) for the pavilion’s architectural design
- EU Award for Exceptional Hospitality in recognition of the pavilion’s outstanding hospitality
